Fly Away Home…

Every year in the springtime months, I lament the departure of our wintering birds –  the spunky cute Dark-Eyed Junco, White-Throated Sparrow,  and other winter migratory birds native to my area. Fortunately, this too means welcoming back many summer birds species as well: the Gray Catbird, Barn/Tree Swallow and Ruby-throated Hummingbird – to name just a few. These species all migrate many miles from the southern US or even beyond, from South America (some hummingbirds well over 1000 miles)! And too, the return means nests and babies of many of my local resident birds – also the year-rounders –  getting in on the reason the phrase “birds and bees” exists.

So far this season I’ve had fledglings at the feeder with their moms and dads: Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, Downy and Red-Belly Woodpecker, House Sparrows, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees – to just name a few. The pretty Eastern Bluebird pics are from a couple seasons back, where I was lucky enough for my next-door neighbor to have an active nesting box.
